When someone is sexually assaulted during a rideshare trip, the focus should be on the victim—not on protecting a corporate image.

Yet recent reporting has highlighted allegations that some sexual assault victims have faced aggressive legal tactics, repeated attacks on their credibility, and a legal process that can feel more like an interrogation than a search for the truth. For many survivors, the trauma doesn’t end when the ride does. The New York Times recently published examples of deposition questions asked of women who alleged they were sexually assaulted during Uber rides. The questions focused on what they were wearing rather than on the conduct of the alleged perpetrator or whether the company took adequate steps to protect passengers.

For many survivors, the trauma doesn’t end when the ride does. It continues when they’re forced to defend their own actions instead of seeing the spotlight placed where it belongs—on the perpetrator and on whether the company did enough to keep passengers safe.

Questions that echo the oldest forms of victim-blaming—“Why were you there?” “Why didn’t you leave?” “Why did you get in the car?”—have no place when someone reports an assault. They belong in the same category as the discredited question, “What were you wearing?”

That should outrage all of us.

Victims are not the ones on trial. They should not have to prove they deserved to be safe. And no corporation should place its reputation ahead of the people who trusted it to get them home safely.
