Driving Over 100 MPH? You Could Lose Your License
Maybe you’ve noticed new signs on San Diego freeways warning that you could lose your license for driving over 100 mph. Here’s what’s happening.
The new signs are a reminder that speeding isn’t just about getting somewhere faster. Speed kills. Slow down, pay attention, and give yourself—and everyone else on the road—a better chance of getting home safely.
The San Diego car accident lawyers at Eugene Bruno & Associates can answer any questions you have if you have been injured by an unsafe driver.
California’s 100 MPH Speeding Law
For many years, California has treated driving over 100 mph as a special offense under Vehicle Code section 22348(b). A first conviction can cost up to $500 in fines and a license suspension of up to 30 days.
What is California’s FAST Program?
California is now taking a more aggressive approach. In December 2025, the DMV and California Highway Patrol launched a pilot program called FAST—Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets. Under the FAST program, every ticket for driving more than 100 mph is automatically referred to the DMV, even if the driver has no prior negligent-operator points.
The important part to remember is that the DMV process is in addition to the traffic ticket. In other words, paying the speeding ticket does not end the matter. The DMV will independently review the incident and your overall driving record and can determine whether to suspend or revoke your license.
This means a 100+ mph ticket is no longer something you can simply pay and forget. It can trigger a separate DMV review of your driving record.
Paying a 100+ MPH Ticket May Not Be the End
The new signs are intended to get your attention—and they should.
If you receive a Vehicle Code § 22348(b) citation, don’t assume that paying the ticket is the end of the story. You may also have a DMV hearing to deal with, and the DMV hearing could result in the loss of your driver’s license.
